What the Original iPhone Teaches About a 4G-Equipped iPhone — 512 Pixels
Great article by Stephen Hackett on why Apple would be stupid to put 4G chipsets into iPhones anytime soon.
Not only are actual 4G networks still very rare in the U.S., Europe and large parts of Asia, the technology on the handset side if very much in its infancy.
“Let’s talk iPhone” event recap
I followed the event on Twitter, Arstechnica.com and Macworld.com (as long as their live blogs were up).I wasn’t overly impressed, but far from disappointed:
- We finally have a shipping date for iOS 5 and iCloud (Oct. 12th), which is what I was most interested in.
- The ‘Family and Friends’ feature is a nice addition that will surely come in handy sometime.
- The new watch faces for the iPod nano might be whimsical, but I think they are a nice touch.
- I think the Touch deserved some kind of hardware upgrade, not just a new colour, something like a storage bump to 128 Gb.
- The iPhone 4S is a logical upgrade, with a nice speed bump, longer battery life, impressive theoretical 3G speeds and an incredible upgrade to the camera. The latter feature is the most tempting for me, because I shoot a lot of pictures with my iPhone 4. I really don’t mind them sticking with the design, as I find it to be the best since the original iPhone and one of Apple’s best designs, period.
- Siri I’m going to have to try in person. As a Star Trek geek I’m excited about the feature, but a bit sceptical; the demo sounded too good to be true.

Extensive comparison of iPhone notes applications
Should you be planning to buy a notes application for the iPhone (or iPad), but unsure which ones have any merit, I highly recommend reading the linked blog post.
It’s a comprehensive review of four better than average note taking applications on the App Store.
I personally own Simplenote, Elements and Plain Text, of which my favourite is Simplenote. I synchronise it via Simplenote’s service and Notational Velocity on my Mac.
Reading this review, brought a few features of Simplenote to my attention that I didn’t know about, but which will come in extremely handy.
A 4" iPhone doesn't make sense to me
The linked post above made me think about the rumour, that the next iPhone will feature a 4” screen. I don’t think it’s going to happen and these are my reasons:
- The increase in raw screen size in minimal, while the device has to become significantly bigger.
- Assuming Apple won’t increase the resolution, they would loose the ability to convincingly call this a “Retina Display”.
- A new display-size demands new expensive production lines.
I’m not dismissing the possibility, as Apple tends to spend a lot on R&D, but they also rely on economies of scale to keep their profit margins up. Changing the size of the display — which was probably extensively researched and tested and has worked very well for both Apple and its customers — would require large investments.
For me the 3.5” screen size hits a sweet spot: It’s big enough for me to type comfortably, even though I have big hands and the device is small enough to fit comfortably into my jeans pocket — and don’t want to carry a murse just for my phone.
iPhone 4 name nitpicking
I know that this is nitpicking of the highest degree, but could we please stop calling the ‘CDMA iPhone 4’ the ‘Verizon iPhone’?
Verizon’s deal with Apple isn’t exclusive, which means that not only could Sprint carry the CDMA iPhone 4 in the USA, but other CDMA-based carriers in South America and Asia will most likely get it, too.

Another set of nice walls for the iPhone’s homescreen.
Really worth a click if you’re one of those people who like to change the curtains every now and then.
via Daring Fireball: Beijing Apple Store Closed Due to Scalpers Buying Unlimited iPhone 4s
This describes one of my main problems with China at the moment.
There are scammers and criminals everywhere in the world, but nowhere have I found the inhibition threshold to scam and trick a person out of their money as low as in China.
I’m not even talking about actual criminals, but ordinary people, that’ll do anything to gain an edge and make that extra bit of money, often off of another person’s back.
Daring Fireball: What's Next for Nokia?
Brilliant write-up; there’s not much more anyone could add to this.
I’ve had to go back to using my old Nokia E51 while waiting for my iPhone 4 and the experience has been gruelling.
It wasn’t the hardware — I quite like the design and the build — but the lack of apps, the crummy software and the awful UI.
Oh my, I’m an AppStore addict
Since I sold my iPhone 3GS in anticipation of the iPhone 4 last week, I downloaded six applications, five of which I paid money for. The sixth one was Twitterrific Universal, which I’m going to upgrade to ‘premium’ in App, once I have an iPhone again.
What does that tell you?
For one it tells you that I’m much too trigger happy when it comes to new apps. It also tells you that I see so much value in the AppStore and the products that are offered therein, that I’m willing to buy applications, even though I won’t be able to use them for at least another three weeks*.

And a great review it is, Joshua Topolsky really did a great job.

My favourite weather app Outside has been updated to version 1.1!
A x.1 update might not sound like much, but it is the first major update for the application:
It now supports multiple locations, sports a weather overview and received some nice little tweaks — everything you’d expect from dedicated indie developers.
